Here is a link to a report put out by researchers in Iowa that addresses calculating weighted food miles. It seems a few places in the country have utilized this method in order to evaluate the efficiency of their food transportation system. The frame work takes into account mode of transportaion, something often overlooked in simple analysis of environmental impacts caused by food shipment.
